Crafting your tailor made website

November 17, 2016

In the current age of marketing, your optimized web presence is virtually required. Here are some suggestions to make the most of your online asset.

Making a good site even better

You can make a good website great by studying what makes it look polished and professional. Aside from being appealing, an optimized website could be the difference between visitors who stay or click past. Consider these key points:

• Is it attractive? Does it make good use of color, creating the proper tone for your business?
• Does your layout keep the eye focused on the information about your company, products and services without being distracting or overwhelming?
• Have you installed headers?
• Is the content easy on the eyes? Are the fonts in a good size range that translate well to your mobile friendly application?
• Do you use small impactful blocks of content without overwhelming your client?
• Are your graphics in keeping with the company image? Are the photos on your site appealing and clear?
• Have you made your products and services easy to find and obtain?Casual Guy typing on laptop

After putting together an amazing website, how will you know if all of your hard work is paying off? Take a look at your site and, if you’re feeling brave, the site of your competition. What are you doing that is similar? What are you doing that is different?
Does your site usher the eyes around to your “calls to action”? Or, is your site bogged down with too much clutter? Is it distracting? Does your page load quickly or slowly? The easier it is to navigate the less likely they are to jump off the page. Where does your site rank in results?

What’s optimized?

Since Google owns 65-70% of the search engine market share, you may want to install Analytics and get familiar with the Google Search Console. These statistics should motivate you to let Google lend you a hand:

• 75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results.
• 70-80% of users ignore the paid ads, focusing on the organic results

You can also rate your page for optimization and readability by installing Yoast SEO. They also offer a free plugin version and Yoast premium. You might even try the handy little website checker on which displays results for your web page based on a scoring system of 1 thru 100 and by rating each of these characteristics:
• presence online,
• findability
• security
• speed

Under each heading, view comments on how well you’re doing and suggested solutions should your scores fall below optimal. It takes less than a minute to see your page’s strengths and vulnerabilities. This website gets bonus points for showing how to improve your site at no charge.

Website Grader is another tool that grades performance, mobile, SEO and security that you can investigate here. We will talk more about SEO in the next post. You can find the Yoast SEO plug-in here.
